- hyperosmolar non-ketotic state
a state of extreme hyperglycaemia seen in type 2 diabetes that is due to increased production of glucose in the liver, reduced muscle usage, and often an excessive intake of sugary drinks in an attempt to combat what is thought by the patient to be a viral illness. There is excessive urine output and steadily worsening dehydration, but no acidosis or ketosis . Even with treatment (including intravenous fluids and insulin) mortality can be as high as 15%.
